When in doubt, check the funnel
Funnels are one of the simplest ways to break down messy product problems into solvable parts.
Funnels are one of the simplest and most useful ways to break down a problem. Whether you are thinking about onboarding, conversion, retention or operational workflows, most problems can be understood as a series of steps.
And funnels make bottlenecks visible. Instead of looking at a problem as one large failure, you can ask simpler questions. Where are people dropping off? Which step has the most friction? Which stage is underperforming relative to the rest?
Very often, the funnel points you directly to where the bottleneck is, making prioritisation easier. Improving one part of the funnel is often enough to create meaningful movement. That is the value of funnel thinking — it narrows your focus.
Even in the worst case, a funnel gives you structure. It forces you to isolate pieces, improve one variable, measure the returns and iterate.
Looking at the funnel might not make all your problems go away, but it always is the best starting point.
